Nice to see some interest into the smartport :)
I wrote an harddisk emulator for the smartport last year, and started an USB adapter for the smartport some months ago. This adapter is small enough to fit within an external 3"1/2 drive, or even within the 2c itself. As I'm not an hardware engineer, I managed to use available hardware to lower the cost and still get good quality hardware. 

Your work is impressive, I will stay tunned for more news :)
