    remind me of some posts I saw a while back on `stick-tion'.
    Older HD's have older lubricant, more wear; leading to a
    slower start-up (ie: hesitating and/or over-coming the
    drives' tendency to remain at rest - much like myself, in
    the evenings...). The slower start-up results in the system
    going to fetch info from the HD and not finding it - as it's
    not ready yet (not up to speed) when the `fetch' happens, so
    the system ends up `hanging' or showing other odd behavior.

    Yet, a few seconds later - when a warm-boot is initiated;
    everything works fine - but that's because the HD is now up
    to speed. I'm sure the experts here will be able to confirm
    or correct this supposition of mine. I don't know of any
    easy `fix' - but again, the experts probably can help you.
    As well - this may (or, may not...) be covered in the FAQ.
