Anything which snags the normal startup process. There are lots of
possibilities, but, in many cases, you are likely to be dealing with one or
more IC's which have pins making poor contact with socket points.
It is not uncommon for II+'s to have problems when IC's develop a
corrosion coating on the pins. A few years ago, when our II+ started acting
weird, I pulled the ROM, RAM, and 6502 chips and cleaned off the black
coating on pins using fine-grade sandpaper. This cured the problem. George
Rentovich came up with the idea of dumping the IC's into a glass with
Tarn-X-- he claims it works great.
Whenever you remove IC's, it's a good idea to mark the socket and IC
with white-out or nail polish on the keyway end (the end with the notch or
dot or hole) so that there will be no problem replacing the IC correctly. For
the II+ ROMs, jot down the ROM ID info and note its placement on a drawing.
