When you say "turns off", do you mean the power LED goes out, or just
that you lose high voltage? 

Some Apple monitors have a safety feature that kills the high voltage if
a fault in the HV is detected. I think it is for x-ray protection. I
figured out how to bypass it, but unfortunately the picture could not be
focused, so it didn't really help. I concluded that the flyback was
faulty. I'm not sure if that applies to the IIgs RGB, but the click part
is the same. It was the cheap color Mac monitor that came with LC's that
I saw with this problem. I got 4 of them free, all with the same
problem, so I couldn't even mix and match to get a good one.

If the powersupply is shutting down, it would point to something drawing
too much current.

Good luck- if you can't fix it, I have a good RGB with a scratched tube
that I'd like to part out.
