I have an Apple //e question...
I just bought an Apple IIe and an Apple IIc monitor to go with it ($5 each
at a local thrift store.... whoo-hoo!) and, after plugging everything in, it
looks like both work fine. Except...
It's been so long since I've used an Apple IIe (um, around 1985), I've
forgotten exactly how they operate (i.e. what they do) without a disk drive
attached.
Upon powering up, It flashes some screen garbage (I remember this as being
normal), beeps once, and then displays "Apple II" centered at the top of the
screen... and does nothing more. Nothing else I do will reboot it or give
me any kind of prompt or anything. This Apple IIe does not have the
integrated numeric keypad, so I'm certain it's the first version of the
Apple IIe (how many versions were there?).
I figure I must be doing something wrong...
It comes with an 80 column card (I suspect it may have some RAM on it,
haven't checked) and a disk drive card (two headers on it that say Disk 1
and Disk 2, so I suspect you can attach two disk drives to it (or a DuoDisk
II or somesuch?) Both look to be genuine Apple-branded cards.
I'm assuming the Apple IIe comes with 64K of RAM and is functioning as
designed, but that the presence of the disk I/O card is forcing it to look
for a drive that isn't there, hence why it sits there with "Apple II" as the
only thing onscreen and nothing more, no matter what I do.
Am I right?
Please make all replies directly to: luposian@mailcity.com so that I might
be able to get them while I'm in California away from my computer/ISP and
using my friend's system/ISP. As well, since I'm not sure how many messages
come to this newsgroup, it will help make sure I get every reply without
wondering if I missed any.
Thanks you for any help you can offer...
