Starting with MacOS 7.5, yes it was standard. And, these days you can
download MacOS 7.5.3 for free from Apple and get the 7.5.5 updater.
It's basically a control panel that handles reading/writing of ProDOS
and MS-DOS disks. Seeing that Mac filetypes consist of a 4 byte creator
and 4 byte filetype, the control panel adds a resource fork on ProDOS
disks to store the Mac filetype. This does not happen if the creator
type on the Mac is 'pdos'.

I do seem to remember it being available on ground. Haven't looked in a
long while as I already have it sitting and running on my Mac.
Another thing that ProType is handy for is that it also converts binscii
files.
