TWGS bad cable symptoms/AUX connector?

While I'm working on a way to aquire a 14Mhz chip I'm wondering what the
symptoms of a faulty CPU cable is. I have the older style cable without the dot
and gold pins. I do remember reading ages ago that this cable usually had problems
but as I never experienced any back then I never paid any attention to them.

Also what was so special about the updated cable? Could I just fabricate one from
local electronics component stores and expect it to work?

Also there is an auxillary connector at the top of card which was obviously for
some kind of future expansion that never was developed, but does anyone know
what applications were planned for it?
