As you say, if you wanted music you got your Bard juiced up and had him/her
play something during your explorations. Bard's Tale/gs was not exactly loaded
with sound.
Still, there were some nice 'atmosphere' sounds included and one is the
chanting of monks as you enter the Mad God's temple. (It may be that you need to
enter around midnight to get the chanting-- not sure about that.)
For good music soundtracks, Keef the Thief and DreamZone are among the best
in IIgs adventuring. (That was one area Dungeon Master did not score Best in--
although, it's sound effects are great.) Ultima IV, of course, has some very good
MockingBoard music.
So far, the 'best ever' music I've come across in any game has been in Ultima
Underworld II for PC-- one of many great games which could be done on an
accelerated IIgs with hard disk. (IIgs users were really, _really_ screwed by not
having an affordable hard disk system available from the start.)
