That would be easier to answer if we had ever had a ROM 3 here. A couple
weeks ago someone was having trouble getting Shufflepuck Cafe to run on a ROM 3--
don't know if he ever succeeded or ended up using his son's ROM-01.

Various versions of System add patches to in-ROM code. Until 1989, the
patches were exclusively for the ROM-01 ROM. Evidently, the ROM 3 code is
different enough from ROM-01 code so that System versions up through 3 or 4 can
not boot on the ROM 3.

It looks like you can forget about booting originals (or direct copies) of
many commercial GS games on a ROM 3.

Fortunately for ROM 3 owners, practically every pre-System 5 comercial game
of any interest has been deprotected. Some of these games will run under later
versions of System with no changes and some others have been modified to run under
later versions of System.

This leaves some games (and, maybe a few other programs) which do not run on
a ROM 3 GS. I do not know which games, etc. are in this group.
