Trackball?

hi all
I recently acquired an Assimilation model AP0705 trackball for the 512k mac.
This is 9 pin & plugs into joystick port of IIGS.
But will it work? That is -- not yet -- so what do I need to do it get it 
to work? Will it subsitute for a mouse, though not serial?
