Two reasons why this is a no-go:

1) The "small16 bit apps" you see are likely to be GS/OS, not
ProDOS 16 apps and as such you must have GS/OS.

2) Although ProDOS 16 was smaller than even the earliest
GS/OS, the minimum boot DOES NOT fit onto a 5.25" disk.

I recommend that you just go to http://www.allelec.com/ Alltech
Electronics and get a Focus hard drive.  This comes with
System 6.0.1 (GS/OS) for the IIGS and many 16-bit apps, both
small and large.  Like you said, you have lots of RAM, so you
are done if you get this hard drive.

Lastly, ProDOS 16 was a hack, more or less.  No reason to
use it, now that we have GS/OS.  Comparing ProDOS 16
to GS/OS is sort of like comparing Windows 1.0 to
Windows 95.  The former was little more than a shell while
the latter is a real OS (before anyone attacks, I know DOS
is still present in Win 95, but nonetheless, Win 95 is a real
OS, unlike Win 1.0).
