     Don't know. If something like that happened on our PC, I would figure that
Windows had ordered a Disk C: scan and dumped 'lost chain' stuff in trash just
in case I wanted to pull it out and check it before doing a permanent delete.
 
     Evidently, the usual reason an OS wants to do a disk scan upon startup is
that correct shutdown procedure was not followed during the last powerdown and
the OS suspects garbage may have been written to the hard disk. For example, if
some young person is using your computer, he/she may be just flipping the power
off after a gaming session.

     
     You should be able to get a better description of what's happening on a Mac
newsgroup, such as comp.sys.mac.system . Comp.sys.apple2 is an Apple II
(pre-Mac) newsgroup.
