Some Apple II users have experimented with swapping in a 65C802 for
the 65C02 found on newer 8-bit Apple II's. (The swap does not seem work
as well for Apples using the older 6502.) The 65C802 is very similar to
the 65C816 but it is limited to 16 address lines.

If your IIc+'s microprossor is socketed, you could try swapping in
a 65C802 rated for at least 4MHz and experimenting with 16-bit
instructions and writing your own programs.

There was software developed around 1985 for the one or two 65C816
Slot boards which came out before the IIgs; some of this software might
run on a IIc+ using a 65C802. Some early 16-bit assemblers might run
okay, too. Otherwise, nearly all 16-bit software is going to assume
that it is running on a IIgs and not run correctly on other Apple II's.
