New ][ gs user needs help

I just got an Apple ][ gs when I turn it on there is no startup chime the
screen comes up displaying a few colorful lines. If I do the self test the
screen edges go magenta but no text is displayed. This is my first Apple ][
so I know nothing about them. Any ideas?
