Fun article-- especially for someone with stacks of games! The idea
of collecting games in the Beanie Baby sense is something I've mulled
over a few times but never seriously considered. As you say, they may be
worth something some day.
One value factor you seem to overlook in the piece is the game
itself. In general, good games attracted a lot of attention and this
equates to interest in owning an original.
For example, the first Ultima was a good game and it 'made a big
splash'. Lots of Apple II users played Ultima and, among these, are a
some wealthy types willing to spend $$$ for an original Ultima from
California Pacific. (Meanwhile, there a lots of original owners who
treasure their copies.)
On the other hand, Akalabeth was a rather weak adventure. It is
doubtful that anyone would pay much for an original. At best, in this
case, we are talking about a very small market.
Thanks for an interesting and provocative read.
