Newbie at Apple IIgs

Hey There!

I have a friend who's mom has decided she wants to go online with her
IIgs. All she really wants to do is email. Yea, right <g>.

I have the computer to set it up except for the modem. I haven't seen the
disks she has. I figure I can download any system sofware needed on to my
G3. Downloading via ftp.apple.com. The modem, an Apple IIe Data Modem
(2400), is going to be purchased from shrevesystems ($5).

My question(s) are:

Is there a better or faster modem?
Do I need special cables?
How do I check if there is enough memory to run the disks from ftp.apple?
How do I convert from the images on my G3 to a readable disk for the IIgs?
Is it easy to add memory?
What about a hard drive? What kind? Where to get one?
Printer?
CD-ROM drives?
Bigger monitor?
Upgrades?
Software?
