That is EXACTLY what I saw with the HP CD-RW drive.  Packet
writing didn't seem to take much CPU power at all and worked
just like floppy/hard drive writing.

I'm pretty sure the IIGS can handle this.  I mean, it can handle
the Tulin Optical drive and that's probably because that drive
used packets, just like a floppy/hard drive.
