Have you tried to force a binary download using lynx
by pressing the D key?  It has a similar effect to
pressing the shift key to download in binary via Netscape.

Cleveland freenet doesnt offer lynx.
cyberspace.org offers lynx, but the download didnt work
So, the only way for me to download is to use agora@...jp
or some mail-server.
It boils down to having a text files to be uudecoded,or demimed etc.
