I _suspect_ it is the IIgs rom chip that's bad. I've seen the
"checkerboard" pattern at power-up on incorrectly written IIc ROM chips.
The IIgs rom is a big chip located beside the 65C816 processor.
If this were a IIc, I could offer a good IIc rom. But the IIgs rom is
huge by comparison to the IIc rom, and my tiny eprom burner can't handle
the IIgs rom.
