One possibility is that you tried to boot a diskette which is not
bootable. I'm pretty sure that at least two of the diskettes in the set
(Install and System) can be booted.
It may be that you have not fully processed the disk files you
downloaded. The system disks at
ftp://ftp.apple.com/dts/aii/sys.soft/gs.system.6.0.1/ are in the from of
.bsc files. These are binscii files of ShrinkIt disk archive files which
include a Binary II header. These can be un-binscii-ed and unshrunk on
your Apple IIgs: use a binscii program like GScii or BINSCII to obtain
ShrinkIt disk archive files; then, use ShrinkIt or GS-ShrinkIt to obtain
the diskettes.
If you think there may be something wrong with the downloaded disks
and you wish to avoid some bother, you might download the System 6.0.1
set plus directions from the Asimov-GS archive site at ...
ftp://apple.cabi.net/pub/applegs/System/Sys601INSTALL/
These disks are plain Shrinked disks you can unShrink to diskettes with
ShrinkIt or GS-ShrinkIt.
