I have here a Vulcan IIgs manual, as I used to have a 20Mb Vulcan.
The manual implies that the Vulcan driver (*/System/Drivers/VULCAN) is not
actually required to use the Vulcan drive, but that the driver improves
the Vulcan's performance under GS/OS.
Today, my 20Mb Vulcan drive lives in my //e (I swapped interface cards
with a Vulcan-20 owner who had a IIgs), and runs Prodos-8 with no special
drivers.
Look for a directory containing the Vulcan utilities: BACKUP.II,
PART.MANAGER, and PARK.HEADS. Copy those to a floppy; also copy off the
GS/OS driver. PART.MANAGER contains utilities for formatting and
partitioning the disk (Vulcan 20 < 32Mb, so why partition unless you are
using it with DOS 3.3?). Those utilities are worth keeping; then you can
reformat the disk using a ProDOS or GS/OS format utility, and reinstall
everything. I think DOS 3.3 needs to be patched to see the Vulcan, but
ProDOS can find it unaided.
I seem to recall reading someplace that the Vulcan driver offered little
or no benefit under GS/OS 6.0.1 (but is beneficial under 5.0x), but I
won't swear to that.
