Eastern standard time is GMT-5, as you said. Eastern daylight time is GMT-4
and the other time zones in the US follow suit. Continental Europe's
standard time is GMT+1 and daylight time is GMT+2. So continental Europe
is exactly 6 hours ahead of the east coast of the US throughout the year
except for the odd days or weeks when one is on daylight and the other
isn't yet and vice-versa. Britain is an hour closer to the US time.
