Actually, Apple's 800k drives CAN read MFM disks.  It is just no
controller manufactured by Apple for any Apple II or any Mac
can make it do this.

However, the PC Transporter by Applied Engineering contains
a SWIM chip (by agreement between Apple and PCT) which is
programmed to read and write 720k MFM disks USING A
STANDARD 800K APPLE 3.5" DISK DRIVE!

Cool, eh?

But you are correct.  It won't work with PC Exchange.
