Are you using the latest version of DeskPlay? I never had a
problem with it myself, maybe you should try reinstalling it or
could explain how it's unstable. You can download the newest
version from <http://www.igd.fhg.de/~girschik/nfc> (actually
that URL is outdated, but will take you to the same place).

Beatbox sounds about as good as shellPlay, but features some
nice graphical players (1, 4 and 8 channel live oscillascopes).
It also supports playback of MED and 8 channel MODs, which is
something unique to Beatbox (well shockWave too, but that was
never released. Mind you it offered some neat graphical players,
like something similar to Tim Meekin's Software Experience #1
demo and early support for S3M's. I *think* that project split
and is why Beatbox exists).
