If the eprom is the problem you may not be able to read it in the first
place.  Also, despite what some people think eproms do not just go bad
like eggs.  There is signal degradation after about 10yrs of  %25, but
it is still perfectly usable.  If you read the data then write it back
every 10 years it should last 1000 years.  It is however a good idea to
back it up.  If you want more info there are lots of books on them, I
have one called "Experiments with EPROMs" by Dave Prochnow.  The book is
