I also have some memory that ProDOS support became less reliable in Mac OS
over time, though nothing solid to back that up. If true, I would guess the
newer versions of PC Exchange would be responsible. It would be interesting
to swap out the version of PC Exchange in 9.x for the version in 7.5.5, or
disable it entirely and instead use the ProDOS File System extension, which
is on the Apple IIe Card Startup disk Apple still has available for download
(and which was ultimately integrated into PC Exchange in 7.5.3).
