Apple 2 firmware reference Question.

A year ago I bought a book at one computer warehouse called
"AppleIIgs Firmware Reference".  Brand NEW for $25 bucks. 
Well this book has lots of useful crap that is cool when u know how to
use it.  So my question is HOW TO USE IT ??

For example "Generic Smart Port calls"  ... Well we all know what port 5 is so i found
some call that dont make sense to me..

What are these how do i use them ?
