Yes indeed.  It looks like it is displaying a fixed bit pattern in that
byte (looks like $21 - two pixels are on, near opposite ends of the
byte).  I hadn't tried 80-column mode on the machine previously.

The IOU in this machine is soldered in, and is part 344-0022-B.  (The
other (beige) IIe I have here is too deeply buried to check its part
number at the moment.)
