In addition to all this great information, let me add:

1. You can't create Apple IIGS disks on a standard PC. The physical disk
formats are different. You can download the files and create 800K Apple IIGS
disks on a Mac, and there are several methods for creating the disks that
involve special equipment, either on the PC or the Apple IIGS, but in general
you're going to need either a Mac or a functioning Apple IIGS so you can
download files right to the GS.

2. Buying a hard drive is the best solution, but if you don't want to invest
$60 and up in the Apple IIGS right away, you can get system disks from the Byte
Works. We're Apple's official outlet for Apple II technical information (APDA).
If you are not going to get a hard drive right away, I'd recommend System
5.0.4. We sell the disks for $4. If you will be getting a hard drive, and
either it doesn't already have system software or you want a backup on floppy
that you can use to reinstall the system in case of problems, I'd recommend
System 6.0.1, which we sell for $8.
