For whatever programs that read the soft switch that this controlled, it would 
allow a program to diagnose whether you wanted to force a program into 40 
column mode vs. 80 column mode.

In practice, very few programs actually read the state of the soft switch and 
when I had an Apple //c I never bothered with toggling it to 40 column mode - 
left it in the default (up) position and was done with it.

Here's an anecdotal note for you guys who want to use Apples that support 80 
columns with a TV set - I've found that the 12" RCA ColorTrak models 
(Manufactured after about 1986) do quite a nice job of displaying 80 column 
text readably.
