Terry, Apple spun its software business off into Claris because
they were getting alot of heat at the time from 3rd party software
developers who thought that Apple was unfairly able to compete
with them for Mac software markets. So, Apple spun off most
software into Claris (except for OS development, Hypercard at
the time, and perhaps a few others I can't recall at the moment)

In a way, it is the same gripe heard by Microsoft from its
3rd party developers. Microsoft knows the OS better than anyone
(some may say this isn't really an advantage! ;-) ), so they
have a huge lead in developing software like Microsoft Office,
browsers,....
