That's true, but remember that there was a dichotomy of Mac designs.

Pre-GS:

Closed box, no slots
No ADB ports, used 9-pin Mouse port and "Telephone" Keyboard port
Black and white
Integrated monitor

Post-GS

Open box, had slots
ADB ports
Color GUI
External monitor

There were other things that got changed as Macintosh borrowed from
GS/OS, such as the disappearance of Font/DA mover and other stuff.

I think the IIGS was used as a test for some of the changes they made
to Macintosh.  Incidentally, Steve Jobs was ousted at around the time
of the IIGS.  Now he is back.  Now the iMac pops up.  Coincidence?
I don't think so.  Jobs always liked the closed all-in-one design.
