Whenever Joe writes "buy a LaserJet" I traditionally chime in with
"PostScript printers are good, too." :-)

The cost of an Apple LaserWriter Plus printer is as low as the DeskJet. My
own cost $400 (Canadian), and I more recently helped a friend buy one for
$200 (Canadian).

You don't need to buy the excellent Harmonie package from Joe (although
you should, even if you don't need it, just to make him happy). The
printer driver for a PostScript printer is included in System 6.

You can share the printer over a network with a Mac, or another GS,
whichever you happen to have around the house.

Disadvantages: on the whole, you're stuck with the selection of fonts that
are built into the printer. There was a program (LaserBeam) from EGO that
let you upload PostScript versions of the fonts that you want to use
before you use them ... but that extra step can be a pain, and you may not
be able to locate PostScript versions of the fonts you want. Also, you
don't get nice greyscale graphics, although line graphics are nice enough.
