Re: Superdrives
[snip]
As for attaining an external Superdrive I suggest against it. By the
time Apple introduced the Superdrive, external floppies were rare
among
new Macs. Since there was a low demand very few were produced so
external superdrives command a premium these days. However, internal
Superdrives are rather common as are external Apple 800k drives. Now,
if
one were to place a Superdrive mech in a 800k drive case and attach it
to 800k logic the result would be a homemade external Superdrive at
about half the price of an original. Of course you wouldn't have
Superdrive silkscreened on the front but sometimes life is tough.

I put a superdrive from a Mac IIci into the case of the 800K external
drive that came with my kid's IIgs. It worked fine, but functionally,
it was no different than the drive the IIgs came with. It won't read
HD floppies or PC formatted floppies, I've heard that the controller
card is necessary for the setup to work :-(
