You can do this with the Mac only 3.5 800k external drives. I not sure
about the IIgs compatible 3.5 800k drives though. In addition to your
new external drive you will need a superdrive controller to use a 1.44
disk on a IIgs.

I've never done this myself but I heard about it on the Classic Macs
mailing list. If you're hesitant to cannabalize the Superdrive from your
LC, I've found a guy who on the net who sells external Superdrives for
$27 plus shipping. However, at that price I would not be surprised to
find out that he uses the same hack that I mentioned above. You can find
