Just to throw a little support for Stephen's new service, I used an
Apple //e power supply with my IIgs for years. I upgraded my //e to a
IIgs and all that was replaced was the motherboard, bottom and back
plates of the case. I was still using the original power supply.

After buying a IIgs case from a local dealer, I move my IIgs
motherboard into it with the intention of buying a heavy duty IIgs
internal power supply for it at some point. I never did buy one.

I continued to use a //e power supply (I think this was an extra one
and not the one from my //e to IIgs upgrade) as an external power
supply for my IIgs up until this year when I took a surplus IBM power
supply I had from an old IBM XT case (150 Watt power supply) and made
a conversion cable for it to use it with my IIgs.

Admittedly, I don't have a lot of cards in my IIgs at present. Just a
5.25" floppy controller (so I can enable and disable 5.25" disks
whenever I want), a CMS SCSI card and a CV-Tech 4 MB RAM card with an
Apple 1 MB card in its piggy back slot.

For those who aren't pushing their IIgs' to the limit, a //e power
supply should be fine for a while.

I don't see it as being "unsafe" as you said. There is little to no
chance of damaging anything, other than the power supply if, you try
to draw too much current from it. Most likely the power supply will
just shut down and you won't be able to power up your IIgs.
