ROM 3 MB with ROM 1 case

Is there any reason I cannot put a ROM 3 MB in a ROM 1 case and p/s?
Were there any physical differences between the 3 and the 1?  I have
access to a 3 buy have been hesitant to try the swap because I don't
know the answer to this question.  Any advice would be appreciated.
