This would be best asked in comp.sys.apple2.comm because that is where
communications related discussion should be.
However, on my USR 14.4 Sportster, dip switches 1, 2, 6 and 7 are up,
the rest are down.
The Sportster modem I have has all the dip switch settings listed on
the bottom of the modem. The important one for use with an Apple II
is dip switch 1. The up position sets the modem for normal DTR (Data
Terminal Ready) operation. Down, overrides DTR.
I had problems with several modems with my IIgs where the modem
wouldn't send any data to the IIgs because it didn't think the IIgs
(Data Terminal) was ready.
If your modem or its manual doesn't list the dip switch settings, let
me know and I'll post them or e-mail them to you.
Another thing you might want to check is to see how your modem cable
is wired. If you just bought a hardware handshaking Mac cable, it
should be wired correctly unless it is some really cheap brand that
decided to cut corners.
