I find it hard to agree with Nathan, but it seems as though Dr. Tom is slightly
confused. The following is an excerpt from Nathan's url above:

"On December 10, 1993, id released its much-anticipated
DOOM, the first shareware game to be
distributed under the id label. DOOM has attained
phenomenal success, and is now recognized as the
hottest 3-D action game of all time, and as the game
that changed the face of computer gaming forever.
An estimated 15 million shareware copies have been
downloaded around the world, passed from player
to player by floppy disk or online networks. More than
250,000 people have registered for the full product
via id's 1-800-id-games order line. In 1994, DOOM was
awarded Game of the Year by both PC Gamer
and Computer Gaming World and received the Award for
Technical Excellence from PC Magazine. And,
id has since released DOOM on Atari Jaguar, Sega 32X,
Super Nintendo and Sony Playstation."
Maybe Dr. Tom meant 1996?
