Usually, yes. But IBM once made the mistake of introducing the PS/2
architecture, which wasn't compatible with the old ISA hardware. So
everyone who bought such a computer also had to buy all their hardware
anew.
This caused IBM to lose a lot of confidence by the market. Companies who
always had been faithful to IBM now began looking into other brands. And
the PS/2 line never was as successful as IBM hoped.
However, they learned from their mistake. The next generation of
computers they built had the good old ISA architecture again.

Apple on the other hand, may be too proud to admit they make mistakes...
