Well, after reading some of the responses to your question.  About time
someone gives you a decent answer.

Restart by holding down the Esc key and pressing Commmand-Control-Reset.
Release the the Reset key, then release the the Escape key when you see
the word "Normal" on the screen; then release the other keys. If you
don't see the word "Normal", try again.

To turn the accelerator back on, just restart without pressing the Esc
key.
