Like, perhaps, many Appleworks 2 users, I do not know what changes
were made to arrive at v2.1. Mainly, the usual procedure was to add
patches for Awks 2 as they became available. (Perhaps my Awks 2 has, by
now, become Awks 2.1. With the patch to fix recognition of larger GS
memory, it maybe qualifies as v2.2!)
I did not know that Awks 2.0 would work on a 64k IIe. For years, we
used ScreenWriter II on the II+ even though we had added true lower case
KB input and lower case display. (Awks 2 would have been _so_ much
better.)
Whatever; the first bunch of Time Out add-ons-- a spell checker,
thesaurus, SuperFonts, FileManager, ...-- from Beagle worked great with
Awks 2.x on the GS. So, there was no great interest in Awks 3 or 4.
Eventually, Awks 2 was replaced by Awks 5 mainly because it was
necessary to review Awks 5 and Awks 5 makes it much easier to handle
Text files (but Awks 2.x is still on hard disk, just in case).
Everyone liked Styleware's GS word processor and looked forward to
enhancements. Unfortunately, Claris bought out Styleware and big,
cumbersome, glitch-prone Awks GS was the result.
For now, Awks 5.1 remains my favorite GS word processor with
ShadowWrite to handle quickie Text viewing from the desktop. If Bev and
Texas II are developing Awks 5.x enhancements, good!
