It's because newer formatters put the driver in a partition named 
APPLE_DRIVER43 instead of just APPLE_DRIVER. That's done so newer Macs know
whether the driver is SCSI manager 4.3 savvy. The IIgs only expects the
partition name to be APPLE_DRIVER so it gags on it. Someone gave me a patch
to use on the SCSIHD.DRIVER file to cure the problem but I used an older
(pre SCSI manager 4.3) version of HD SC setup and now I don't need a patch.

If people use the genex thing to get the same result, more power to 'em. I'll
not take it personally if people use different methods than mine, unlike that
supertimer guy. Mention that you use a Mac formatter on your hard disk or
ProTYPE to strip resource forks and he goes off it seems. I'd certainly say
that ProTYPE is the best way to handle file transfers but I suppose either
way of formatting your hard disk is ok. I find using MAc formatters a lot 
easier myself.
