Zip drive does work.  I have have one running on my IIgs and all seems
fine.  I don't see me using more than a few megabytes for simple
hacking and bit twiddling.  I do need more, I can either get a large
fixed HD (starting at around US$200 these days for 2GB) or use one of
my many UNIXen boxes to act as AppleTalk file servers.
