a2 dead? read this.
Well gang, I have to say that the apple2 platform appears far from dead to me.
I just got a box on my porch this morning from alltech containing the 2e to
enhanced 2e upgrade kit. 3 roms and a CPU. I followed the single page
of instructions, and without a hitch, I now have an enhanced 2e that doesn't
complain at all about running the version of prodos from the apple ftp site.
Cost? 29 bucks US.
Time? About 10 minutes.
It's true these upgrade kits - or at least the r&d for them - are 13 years old
now. (actually the chips looked like pulls - what do I care, they work. ) But
I'd hardly call it a dead platform when you can just order parts like this for
a nearly 20 year old machine. I had more problems getting parts for my 20
year old Volkswagon, and there were a hell of a lot more of them made.
I guess my point here is, there are still a few vendors selling old stuff and
making new stuff for the apple2. Let's stop whining about how we were dumped
by apple, and whatnot, and concentrate on preserving those vendors, eh? If
we convince every newbie who signs on here that the platform IS dead, they'll
put their machines up on the forsale group, buy a used PC or something, and
eventually we WILL kill off the rest of the vendors.
So let's stop whining, let's stop dreaming of what the GS could have been,
and for heaven's sake let's stop the personal crusades against each other and
see what we CAN do with this little machine. Explore its potential in this
modern world of cheap ram, cheap hard disks, and cheap network access. See
where the little computer that could - and DID - change the world can fit in
in the world it created.
Ok?
Ok.
