No big deal...I've seen similar deals in thrift shops and the like...and of
course usenet. ;-) It is not a matter of other computers versus Apple IIGS.
Most of us have access to other computers. We LIKE the GS.

It is REALLY a COOL computer. The little Ensoniq chip is a classic.
Did you know there are fan groups of Mirage and ESQ-1...synths based
on the same sound chip...all over? It is also fun to use. Part of the
attraction is the counter-culture streak. We boldly defy Apple by using
a computer they deamed worthy of destroying. Just like why some
people have, polish, restore, and drive old cars...you know, the classics.
This is the same reason I like to use my trusty manual focus, manual
exposure camera. There are more high tech models around, but I know
it well enough to get good pictures from it and it is fun to use.

Depends on which computer you have grown to like. If you are bonded
to 8-bit Apple II stuff, then to you a GS is no different than a fancy IIe.
To people like me, who like the APPLE IIGS side...the side that runs
16-bit software (basically ALL my software is native) and plays the
Ensoniq chip (see the music I've been posting on comp.binaries.apple2)
and bravely puts up a Wolf 3D game when nobody else thought the GS
could ever run such a 3D engine...a GS is far from a IIe...
