maybe this will help:
a friend of mine here at work (he's an M$ fan, one of these guys that
feel the need to keep his machine constantly updated) tells me that
ATI now supports Linux. i know that there have been drivers out and
about for their cards for a while, but to hear that the COMPANY is
supporting Linux is certainly encouraging.
i read that CorelDraw was being ported to Linux. first there was the
Java version, but that was too darned slow. i understand they were
taking another route.
iD Software has had (unsupported) engines for Doom and Quake out for
some time.
granted, that's just three cases, and it could be argued that they are
"isolated incidents", but it's a START. i think that many developers
are beginning to take Linux seriously. this is a GOOD thing. it'll
take time, but eventually, we'll see some "big names" show their faces
in the Linux community.
i'm not crazy enough to think that the myriad of free software out
there is sufficient enough to replace what the Average User sees for
WinDOZE. whether or not each program is better than the "mainstream"
counterpart is up to the individual to decide, and even then, it's on
a case-by-case basis.
