I talked to a knowledable person last night. He is a chip architect did ARM at
VLSI and consults now. The first ARM plug-ins to replace 6502 were on the BBC
Computers in 1987 and he bought an Archimedes in 1988 (which is where I saw
it). The 6 MHz ARM outperformed an 8 MHZ 68000 (16 bit data buss remember -- it
took a whole bunch of cycles to do a 32 bit operation) with one instruction per
clock. In fact, it emulated a Mac at nearly the speed of a Mac. If you can find
Dave Needle on the net, he might give details on the design and what it was
called, etc.
I also talked to an old business partner and my boss at Information Appliance
(anybody want a SwyftCard or SwyftWare for Apple IIe?) who is back doing
designs at Apple. He is working on the designs to come after the next batch of
new designs! Anyway, he claims all the old timers who worked on this are gone
and that it wasn't an Apple II enhancement, but something entirely different
that was dropped, later, the results may have been looked back on when deciding
whatr to use in th Newton.
