   I don't think there ever was any built-in self test (try also the
system self test of control-solid apple-reset, present in enhanced
//e's). Configuration tended to be lost at poweroff or reboot--
hitting esc when the system first turned on tended to knock //e
accelerators down to 1Mhz.
