Re: What is the difference between ROM 1 and ROM 3 IIgs computers?
: Rom 1 is more compatible, and Rom 3 is slightly faster (because
: the System Disk needs to patch less code).
Well, the ROM 3 has a bigger ROM that contains System 4 Tools,
i.e. if you removed a number of Tools in the System folder, you still can
go into GS/OS without a problem. But when the newer System 6, most of the
tools have been revised and it is recommended to load the System 6 tools
instead of using the ones in ROM.
The motherboard layout changed differently to produce better
sound, and has a bigger on board RAM (1Mb on ROM 3 vs 256k on ROM 01).
It's stupid coz it's STILL 2.8MHz processor on board, I would have thought
Apple would have pushed it to at least 4MHz. But then again, if Apple
shipped 8MHz cpus, ZipGSX and TransWarp would have incentive to push the
cards beyond 10MHz then.
On the ROM 3, could only need to specify either Printer or Modem
Port to be switched to AppleTalk for AppleTalk to be active, but on ROM 01
you will require both Printer and Modem Ports to be switched to AppleTalk.
ROM 4 prototypes (as was discussed much earlier) had better stuff.
Bigger RAM (2Mb ?), built-in SCSI (?), built-in floppy drive.
Actually, I wanted to ask a LONG time, why is ROM 01 more
compatible ? I thought ROM 3 was just an 'enhanced' ROM 01 with more RAM,
and a bigger ROM that incorporates the essential System Tools. Any logical
explainations ?????
